Veneers vs Bonding: What’s the Difference?

Both veneers and dental bonding are used by dental professionals to help patients restore the appearance of their teeth and smile. Even though both techniques have the same goal, there are a few differences between them.

Here's what you need to know.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are tooth-colored shells made of porcelain or resin composite that act as a shell to cover the natural tooth. They are placed on the surface of the teeth and can mask a variety of problems, such as chipped or broken teeth, smaller teeth, or wide between teeth.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Tooth bonding is a procedure where the dentist applies a tooth-colored resin composite on the surface of the tooth to fix decayed, chipped, or broken teeth. It is applied to the surface of the tooth and bonded with a special light.

Differences Between Veneers and Bonding

Durability

Due to the material they are made of, veneers have a longer life span, somewhere between 10 to 25 years. Veneers are made out of porcelain, while dental bonding is made with resin. The bonding material is also less resistant to stains, whereas veneers are better maintained.

Procedure

Veneers are shells that cover the visible part of the tooth. Your teeth will be polished to make space for the shells to be placed. They are made in a lab after the dentist sends all the information about your teeth.

Dental bonding is the process where the composite resin is bonded to the tooth to reshape it or mask it.

Application

While both procedures aim for creating a beautiful smile and correct teeth appearance, dental bonding is recommended when the problems occur only in one tooth that is either cracked or misshaped.

Dental veneers are better suited for someone who aims to transform their smile, and it requires several visits to the dentist.

Preference and Cost

Using dental veneers or bonding depends on each patient’s personal needs and preference. Discussing your best option and solution with your dentists will offer the best-suited treatment for your needs.

While dental veneers have a higher cost and it’s a longer treatment to go through, it does offer a more long-term solution.

But if the issue is minor, maybe dental bonding will be the best option, and costs are lower.
